About the Australian Institute of Conveyancers NSW Division

As the professional body representing licensed conveyancers in NSW the purpose of the Australian Institute of Conveyancers NSW Division is to:

promote, reform and improve the conveyancing profession,
to represent the views of the profession and its members,
to encourage and promote the study of conveyancing, and
to encourage honourable conduct and best practices throughout the profession.

In order to achieve these objectives the Institute’s activities include:

- lobbying Government and related bodies to improve and amend legislation
- the provision of educational seminars and programs for members
- the active promotion of the profession and conveyancing generally
- the provision of tools to enable members to increase their competence and professional standards

As a member of a national organisation such as the Australian Institute of Conveyancers, the Division gains the benefits that go with a national profession and the Division has been, and always will, work closely with the national council of the Institute. Being a member of a national body the Division carries more weight when negotiating with government and related professional organisations and institutions.

The Division invites all conveyancers in NSW to become members and gain the benefits of being involved with the principle professional organisation representing conveyancers in this State. These benefits are only available to Institute members and we welcome all new inquiries and membership applications.

Achievements and work in progress of the Division

Scope of Work
While we were not content with the initial scope of work allowed when licensing was first introduced (limited to residential conveyancing) the Division lobbied and was successful in having the scope of work widened to what we have today.

Licensing body
The Division was not happy with conveyancers being licensed by the Law Society and was instrumental in having the licensing taken over by the Department of Fair Trading. We believe there is still a lot to be desired in the way conveyancers are licensed and we are working towards improving the licensing set up.

Professional Indemnity Insurance
The division set up a policy of PI insurance that was initially considered impossible to achieve. Premiums were initially high and through consistent negotiating premiums are now at an acceptable level. The Division has access to a premium funding facility members may use if required.

National Conveyancers Organisation
The division was represented on the steering committee to set up a national body of conveyancers, The Australian Institute of Conveyancers, which now has Divisions in W.A., S.A., VIC., N.T., Tas. and NSW

Annual State Conference
The Division organises an annual conference and it is intended to continue to hold similar conferences on an annual basis. This is a great way to meet other conveyancers and to assist conveyancers to get the continuing education points necessary to renew your licence.

Standing invitation to address students
The Division has been cementing relationships with the education providers and has been invited to speak to students at Ultimo TAFE and also at Macquarie University.

Consulted by Government Departments
The Division is always being contacted for comment and contribution to government proposals that effect conveyancing and related professions. Meetings are held with department heads and ministers and shadow ministers on a regular basis, either in person or by telephone.

Member LTO Users Liaison Group
Being a member of this group allows the Division to contribute to LTO procedures and to keep informed of changes to LTO procedures and plans that are in the pipeline.

Continuing Education
The Institute conducts seminars on a regular basis so that conveyancers are able to comply with their continuing education requirements for renewal of licenses. This is a lot better and cheaper than having to attend and pay for seminars run by outside sources. We also have an online learning facility to assist those members unable to attend seminars.
